Why use our periodic table?

The periodic table arranges all 118 known elements by atomic number. Elements in the same column share similar chemical properties, and rows (periods) show the number of electron shells. Lanthanides and actinides sit below the main table to keep it readable β€” they fit between groups 3 and 4 in periods 6 and 7.

Frequently asked questions

What is valency? Valency is an element's combining capacity β€” how many bonds its atoms can form, decided by the electrons in its outermost shell.

Why are lanthanides and actinides placed below? To keep the table readable. Embedding 15 extra columns would make it impractically wide.

What is atomic mass? The average mass of an element's atoms, accounting for all its naturally occurring isotopes.

What are noble gases? Group 18 elements like Helium and Neon β€” extremely unreactive because their outer electron shell is full.
